It makes a lot of practical sense, to ‘tag’ your assets physically, to show whether they’re working or not.
By this, we mean that you should physically attach a luggage-tag to any machine or asset which is:
- Not working.
- Needing some kind of attention.
- Unsafe to use.
Your staff should write on the tag, to describe whatever they know about what’s wrong with the asset. For example, “Difficult to start”, or “Cuts out sometimes”, or “Broken deflector guard”.
If you can get coloured luggage tags rather than the cheaper buff or white ones, you can use a “traffic light” system to indicate at a glance the status of any machine or asset in your store.
- Green tags for anything that’s ‘working’ well or not defective.
- Amber tags for minor defects which do not hinder the safe use of the asset.
- Red tags for when an asset should not be used, because it’s not working, or unsafe.
- The amber and red tags are normally disposed of after repairs take place.
